“The truth is that there is nothing noble in being superior to somebody else. The only real nobility is in being superior to your former self” -Whitney Young (1921-1971)

Life isn’t about being better than anyone else. In reality, no one who honestly looks at their life can say they are better than anyone else. We do this either out of ignorance or fear of what we truly believe about our self. We must ask ourselves what is the true yardstick for progress. Is it whether or not we are better than those around us? Is it that we have ourselves under control? Are my decisions today better than they were yesterday?
Desire for superiority over others comes from a fear of powerlessness. If I can prove to myself that I am better than you, I don’t have to listen to that voice inside me that says that I am not enough, that I am weak. This creates a perpetual cycle of a false need to prove myself. To break out of this cycle I simple start to see the growth in me. I do this by acknowledging the positive changes I make in my life.
Taking my focus off the outside world and putting it on the inside takes me out of the fear and into gratitude for the positive things in my life.
Today is the first day of my new nobility. Today, I will acknowledge my growth.
